Using a TENS unit for Back Pain Relief or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS or TeNS) as it is technically known, may just be the answer you have been searching for, if your goal is to reduce or eliminate the amount of medication you are prescribed.  The Tens unit is a controversial device that is used to stimulate nerves.  Its intention is to reduce pain in acute and chronic sufferers.

It’s typically used in patients suffering from post operative pain, sufferers of osteoarthritis and chronic musculoskeletal pain, although it can help reduce suffering of many different types of pain.

Electrodes are attached to the body and electrical signals are sent via wires plugged in the TENS unit. The unit is quite small and can be placed in a pocket or attached to a belt for convenience, and is battery operated so you can move about.  So it can be very uninhibited.  It has been reported to give pain relief for up to several hours.

It works by preventing pain signals from reaching your brain. It is also said to release endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain killers – all dependent on the frequency used.

Using a Tens unit for back pain relief may be the answer to drug free therapy for your back pain, acute or chronic – although there has been some controversy as to whether a Tens units for back pain relief is effective or not.  It will be up to the discretion of the user.

The units are not intended as a cure, but merely to minimize or remove pain from the sufferer, thus reducing the medication the individual must take in order to live a normal existence.  You cannot wear these units in water or while you sleep, so medication will need to be administered to get proper rest.  The pain relief is effective immediately as soon as the unit is in operation, and ends as soon as it is turned off.

So will the Tens unit be the answer to your back pain?

The good news is that they are designed to help alleviate pain associated with back pain, and lots of other types of pain.  They are certainly gaining popularity as a drug free option, and the great thing is you don’t need a prescription. In addition, they are safe and easy to use, provided you follow the instructions and safety guidelines.

If you suffer from conditions such as epilepsy or a heart pacemaker, a Tens unit for back pain relief is not recommended due to the electrical stimuli that may interfere with such conditions.   They are mostly recommended for pain relief from chronic pain such as joint pain, muscular or nerve pain, which is what the vast majority of back pain consists of.

So if you are considering trying a Tens unit for back pain relief, it would be highly recommended that you consult your physician and discuss this drug free option.  It could just be the best thing you ever did.
